2015 Tenyo

2014/2015* Tenyo Magic Tricks

*In previous years, the year attributed to Tenyo tricks on Tenyo’s official website were from the year when the trick was released in the Fall. But in 2014, Tenyo started listing the tricks according to the upcoming year. They also started adding stickers with the upcoming year. There are no tricks listed from 2014 because of this.

This is a preliminary posting of information for the 2014/15 Tenyo Magic Tricks. Of course it is very early, and the tricks are not even officially released yet, but I wanted to get some information posted for those that are interested. Overall, I like these tricks much, much better than last years tricks. Last years tricks I looked at to see what they were and never touched them again. The 2014/15 tricks has sparked my imagination to come up with different handlings and add-ons.  So far Magic Butterfly is my favorite. Make sure to check out the Ideas Gallery at the bottom of the page for preliminary ideas on performing these tricks.

The prices are higher than last year but not by too much. Also, for the first time, Tenyo will be providing English instructions that can be retrieved from their website with a password. The online instructions will not be available until the end of October. Special thanks to Hitomi of Magico-Japan on Ebay for sending me her translated instructions so I can properly review the tricks.

The tricks by Lubor Fiedler and Ali Bong may have been packaged in the World’s Greatest Magic packaging in previous years, but this year that is not the case. I am not sure if that is because the World’s Greatest Magic is no longer, or because the tricks were revised/improved.

Congratulations Tenyo for putting out a good line-up of tricks for 2014/15!

Security Lock

Lubor Fiedler

Description

Primary Presentation – The magician show a transparent green plastic sleeve with a “Magician’s Club” credit card inside. Both the sleeve and the credit card have a hole punched in one side that line up. A pad lock secures the two items together.  The magician opens the lock with a key and removes it. The magician then shows that the credit card can slide freely back and forth in the sleeve. An audience member tries and can also slide the credit card back and forth in the sleeve as well. The magician takes the lock and closes it next to the sleeve with the credit card in it. Now the audience member is asked to try to slide the card in and out like before, but they cannot make it budge. The magician then takes the sleeve and card and waves the keys over it. He then shows that he can slide the credit card back and forth again.

Alternate Presentation — The magician show a transparent green plastic sleeve with a “Magician’s Club” credit card inside. Both the sleeve and the credit card have a hole punched in one side. The magician shows that the credit card can slide freely back and forth in the sleeve. The magician then takes a pad lock and secures the credit card inside the sleeve. Even though the two items are locked together, the magician can remove the credit card from the sleeve even though the lock is still locked. The items can be passed out for inspection.

Comments

This trick was created by the late/great Lubor Fiedler. The concept is so simple, but at the same time diabolical. It reminds me of T-252 Clear Surprise, but mostly because they both have transparent plastic envelopes. The second trick requires some sleight of hand that might be too much for some magicians. The handling looks awkard in the videos. I will probably stick with the primary presentation.

My Rating [i]

Examinable

No for the Primary Routine
Yes for the Alternate Routine

Repeatability/Reset

Instant

Additional Items Needed

None

Prop Notes

You get two credit cards and two sleeves. The credit cards are the same but the sleeves are different for the two routines. The lock is very nice.

The Alchemist

Kenichi Komiya

Description

Two round black plates are shown, the magician then shows a heavy golden metal ball. He places the ball in the center of one of the plates and places the other plate on top. The magician the squeezes the plates together until the come flush together squashing the solid metal ball. When the top plate is removed a golden slug is show and taken in hand. The slug then magically changes to a golden coin.

COMMENTS

To perform this trick you will have to do two sleight of hand moves. Sleight of hand moves are not common with Tenyo Magic Tricks but these are simple enough for most to do.

My Rating [i]

EXAMINABLE

No

REPEATABILITY/RESET

It needs to be reset in private

ADDITIONAL ITEMS NEEDED

U.S. Golden Dollar or 500 yen coin

Prop NOTES

PERFORMANCE NOTES

It looks pretty obvious on the videos how the last phase of the slug changing to the coin is done. I think I will just make the coin appear straight away. If I do go with the slug, then I will vanish it using a french drop rather than turning it into the coin.

This trick was only released in Japanese packaging.

Magic Butterfly

So Sato

Description

The magician presents a white box with a clear cover, he explains that it is an insect specimen box. The box does not have an insect but there is a pin for holding a specimen in place. The magician shows a larger black box/cover to be empty and places the white specimen box under it. The magician then presents to the audience member four butterfly cards. Each card shows colored butterflies one card has red butterflies, one card has yellow butterflies, one green, and one blue. The magician turns the cards over and shuffles them. He then moves the cards from the bottom of the pile to the top repeatedly until the audience member tells him to stop. The card the audience members stops on is shown. The back box/cover is lifted and in the white specimen box is a pinned butterfly matching the butterfly on the selected card.

Comments

This is my favorite of all the 2014/15 Tenyo Magic Tricks so far. Even this trick requires a slight sleight but most should be able to handle it.

My Rating [i]

Examinable

No

Repeatability/Reset

You can do a vanish of the butterfly without reset

Additional Items Needed

None

Prop NOTES

Six cards as well as a blue and a yellow butterfly are provided. The butterflies are printed on clear plastic stock and are not flimsy.

performance NOTES

The instructions show that instead of using the black box/cover you can do a move similar to that performed in Angels coin. Also there is another presentation described in the instructions where you can do a presentation with a Voodoo Doll theme.

The Great Escape

Ali Bongo

Description

The magician shows a black plastic frame with a white elastic cloth attached. He then shows a sold steel plate and fits it inside the frame. He then takes a larger than standard transparent red die and places it on top of the metal plate. Next he wraps the elastic cloth over the die and secures the cloth to the other side of the frame with a metal clip. When the elastic cloth is stretched over the die it becomes slightly transparent which allows you to see the red die underneath. The magician then holds the frame with the die and the cloth over a glass. After a moment you can see the die start to disappear as it slowly melts through the metal plate until it drops in the glass with a clink. Everything can then be handed out for inspection.

Comments

This is an improved version of Ali Bongo’s Through the Mirror. Of the four, 2014/15 tricks, this is the only one that is examinable. The improvement that Tenyo made, makes that possible.

My Rating [i]

EXAMINABLE

Yes

Repeatability/Reset

Yes

Additional Items Needed

Prop NOTES

The plate is smaller than the one from last years Magical MRI, so it is not possible to share the plate and combine the two tricks.

Performance NOTES

You can use other small dimensional items with this trick.
