Stand Alone Magic

You present a set of colorful cards with pictures of birds on them and tell the audience that they are practice cards for bird watchers and that you are going to use them for a mind reading experiment. You have an audience member choose one of 14 different birds from the index card and share their choice with the audience as you turn your back. You then show 4 location cards representing a backyard, a park, a sanctuary, and a forest where the audience member will search for their bird. You hand the cards to the audience member and instruct them to mix the cards so you will not know which cards they are looking at. You tell them to search each location card for their bird and keep the card if their bird is present, and if it is not, hand it over face down. When they are done bird watching you can easily determine their chosen bird which you reveal in a creative way.

You present a card to an audience member with eight Drinks pictured on it. You ask the audience member to choose one of the Drinks on the card and show it to the other audience members. You then review three additional cards with the audience member asking them a simple question about each card. After reviewing the three cards you know their chosen Drink and reveal it in an interesting way. The cards are professionally printed on Plastic Card Stock so it will endure working it at the pub for many years.

As soon as I saw the tray used with Card Surgery I thought of a Petri dish. The next thought I had was to make a replacement card simulating the dissection of a frog. Here is my Frog Experiment card for Card Surgery. After the restoration you can turn the card over for an amusing conclusion to the performance.

With Fortune Sticks, it is hard to see the “tell” even if the light in the room is good. It all has to do with the angle. When using Spirit Board with your Fortune Sticks you are able to “get a hold” of the situation and get the look at the tell that you need, then you reveal, in an interesting/spooky way, the spectator’s choice. The Spirit Board is sturdy and made with the finest materials. It cleverly folds to one quarter its size to make it easy to pack and carry.

Provide another person with a pad and pencil
and ask them to write down the letters as they are revealed.

Making sponge rabbits appear is more interesting to me than the sponge balls provided with Parabox. With this presentation, 3 sponge rabbits appear one at a time from the boxes as they “gozinta” and “gozouta” each other. The decals on the Blue Box and the Red Box tie the rabbits to the boxes and also help make a differentiation between the boxes that is important to the success of the audience appreciating what is happening with the boxes. One set of decals is provided to turn the Blue Box into The Bunny Brothers’ Shipping Container. A second set of decals is provided to turn the Red Box into The Bunny Brothers’ Cage but we tell them it is their “Dressing Room.” ;–)

The colorful poster is an interesting addition to the routine and it reinforces that The Bunny Brothers are known as the Teleporting Magicians which accounts for them appearing in the boxes and moving from hand to hand in the sponge rabbit routine (optional phase). The poster also has a function in that it hides the extra rabbit needed for the sponge rabbit routine.

With this presentation you can stop after making the three rabbits appear from the boxes or you can continue on with a sponge rabbit routine (full photo illustrated instructions included) and even add the sponge rabbits “performing” some Tenyo tricks for a third phase.

You present a transparent green envelope with a Houdini business card inside. There is a hole in the envelope as well as the business card. A pair of miniature metal handcuffs holds the business card inside of the envelope. You show that their is of course no way to remove the business card. You unfasten and remove the handcuffs and show that now the card can be easily moved as you show it sliding in and out of the envelope. You give an audience member a opportunity to try and see that the card now slides freely in the envelope. You then take the handcuffs and wave them over the envelope. You say that magically the card is now once again secured in the envelope and cannot be moved. You say that an imaginary set of handcuffs now hold the card in place. The spectator can not remove the card even though there seems to be nothing holding it in place. You show the audience member the back of the card where Houdini has written “My Brain is the key that sets me free.” You then easily remove the card from the envelope leaving the audience puzzled.

You present a card showing a vintage Houdini escape poster. You show on the other side of the card a picture of Harry Houdini handcuffed. You place the card into the Black Hole device decorated with a vintage stage/curtain skin. As you move the card behind the curtains, a miniature set of steel handcuffs drop with a clank and Houdini appears from the other side no longer in handcuffs.

You present a vintage post card and then turn it over to reveal it is a photo postcard. The photo is of Harry and Bess Houdini, The Houdinis, shown ready to perform their famous illusion Metamorphosis. The postcard is separated into two halves and Harry is placed in the Black Hole Device which is decorated to look like their actual Metamorphosis Trunk. Harry is secured in the trunk with a rubber band. Bess is placed behind a curtain card and both cards are placed on top of the trunk. One, Two, Three… they have mysteriously switched places. Harry is behind the curtain card and Bess in the trunk.

You present two cards. You show a card of a stained glass window picturing the Holy Grail and explain the legend of the Holy Grail. You next show a Knights Templar card front and back and explain their role as protectors of the Holy Grail. You place the two cards together in the Vault (Credit Slasher device) and then take the Credit Slasher broad sword and clearly pierce through the two cards while they can be seen from the top to be in place. A devilish Magic Trick with a new interesting theme similar to those in movies like The Da Vinci Code or Raiders of the Lost Ark.

This is an interesting presentation based on two items once owned by Sherlock Holmes, a clock (Future Clock) and a business card holder (Mind Scanner). The clock was specially made by the visionary inventor Jules Verne for Sherlock Holmes. When the clock is within the confines of London, the clock automatically synchronizes with the Parliament Tower Clock a.k.a. Big Ben. If the clock loses time outside of London, a special card can be used to set the clock. To prove how this works, the magician has an audience member draw a time on the Big Ben card and then places the card face down in the card case without the magician seeing it. The magician then hands over the clock and it is set to the time drawn on the Big Ben card. Other cards are included to support the presentation. The note card of Jules Verne sets up the premise that the clock was made by him especially for Sherlock and that it has a unique feature way ahead of its time. There is also a printed invitation from Harry Houdini (an actual item that exists) and a business card complete with blood stains from Sweeny Todd to be placed in the card case. The extra cards support that the Mind Scanner is Sherlock Holmes business card holder where he carries his calling cards (which includes an ambigram) and the cards of people he would run into in London in the late 19th century.

You present the latest techno gadget, an extremely thin and compact digital camera. But it is not the size that makes this camera special. What makes it special is that it can instantly print the picture just taken. A blank photo paper is inserted into the camera and at first a blurred picture comes out. You insert another blank photo paper and ask your subject to remain still this time as you count to five. One, Two, Three, Four, Five. SURPRISE! A funny picture comes out. Use this to tease someone or use it to make a point to someone who might be giving you a hard time as you perform your magic.

The normal presentation for Black Hole leaves a little to be desired. This presentation uses a coin and is similar in theme to Mira Metal. Instead of a red plastic card with a black hole printed in the middle, this presentation uses a card with a US half-dollar printed on both sides (obverse and reverse). When the card is placed into the Virtual Coin Case, the case mints the coin right on the spot and the coin drops from the bottom of the case making more of an impressive appearance then a wafer thin plastic circle.

These flag background cards work just as well as the plain background card provided, but they are more visual and help to weave a story either about the importance of the Statue to Americans or the creation and gift of the Statue from France.

I didn’t like the use of the tee and ball marker props as the first phase in the standard presentation. Also the sound of opening the gimmick is disturbingly loud. I made this card to use in place of the tee and ball marker. You tell the audience that you have a golf ball in this small briefcase. Of course they do not believe you. You open the case and show them the picture of the golf ball. They look at you sideways. You place the card back into the case and say “watch this.” You shake the case and you can hear the card rattling in the case and a “pop” when the ball has become full dimensional. You take out the full size golf ball and close the case. You then say “and now for something really amazing,” and you open the case and now there is a picture of a bowling ball … ??? The visual of the bowling ball pays homage to J.C. Doty whose original trick was a full size brief case with an actual bowling ball.

Replacement Parts

Merlin’s Coffer is an excellent trick but it is very difficult to perform with 100% accuracy because of the way the gimmick works. With this upgrade the trick becomes 100% reliable and the effect is even enhanced because the washer hangs in full view before the escape rather than being drawn up into the cover.

The cards that come with See through Card are thin and often stuck together. When separated the red ink from one card sticks to another. I have seen this from a little bit to a lot. I have never seen perfect ones. I believe that the trick was packaged when the ink and varnish was still wet and that is why there is always a problem. I have made the three replacement cards for the trick. It also comes with reproduction Doug Henning instructions for See through Card.

With Parabox, the dye from the blue ball often rubs off and stains the yellow ball. This can happen before you even open the package. I have found replacement balls of similar color and size that you can use as a replacement if your yellow ball is too blue for you or if you lost your yellow ball all together.

Please Note that for all of the Add-Ons, you need to own the magic trick.

Choose and Adult spectator and show them a map of Central Europe with nine countries highlighted. Then show them a finely crafted wooden box and tell them that locked inside is a small gift for them and a prediction.

Next say “Before we look inside the box take a look at the map. Do you have an idea of a country you would like to travel to? Well it is not as easy as just picking a country. You will throw this dart at the map and where you land will determine which country you will travel to for your next holiday. If the dart does not land within any of the borders, then you will throw again until it does. If your dart lands inside more than one border then you can choose among those countries. Now throw the dart at the map so we can see where you will be traveling to.” Once the country has been determined, talk about the noted attractions that they might enjoy when visiting there.

Next say “Lets open the box and take the a look at your gift and see what the prediction is all about.” Hand the key to the spectator and have them open the lock and box as you hold it. When they open the box they will see a bill of small denomination folded and placed in a holder. Tell them that the small bill is their gift and that the prediction is in the lower compartment which is the prediction chamber of the box. In the Prediction Chamber they will find a scroll. When they open the scroll they will see the flag of the determined country with a hello greeting in the native language and the suggestion to use the gift to buy an appropriate “refreshment” when they visit there.

Performance points: The small gift should be a bill in the currency of the country you are performing in because the spectator is familiar with it. You can use a 5, 10 or 20. If you think the spectator is likely to take the money then use the 5. The flags in the capitals section of the map are subtly numbered to make part of what you need to do much easier. Also, a special piece is included to add to the 5th position so you can quickly determine the center position and count from there.

Squeeze Thru is a Tenyo-like trick invented by Angelo Carbone. Angelo, as you might know
 invented three Tenyo tricks, Mini-Morphosis, Prison Box and Floating Card. Squeeze Thru 
was manufactured by Fantasma Magic and the cover design, string and washer does not
 do the trick justice. With the Dragon Pearl emblem you get the look of a Milson-Worth 
effect and with the red cord and pearl you can weave a dramatic story. The story is of powerful red dragon that dove into the underworld to retrieve a valuable pearl but could the dragon figure out how to get back to earth with a pearl that is bigger then the hole the dragon traveled through to get below?
