Updating 4D Surprise, how to change background color?

Post by FredA » Thu Sep 25, 2014 4:12 am

I really like Lubor Fiedler's 4D Surprise, but the "weakest" thing from my point of view is that I personally have no use for the statue of liberty, I just can't use it in my performance because I can't find a proper way to present it. So I would like to use a Godzilla figure instead (I'm a massive Kaiju fan), and - it's a long story - the easiest way for me is to change the color on the background plate. I really don't want to destroy it, and maybe some of you have been able to remove the blue color plate and replaced it with something else?

But how to do it the best way, without causing damage to the prop? Any ideas? I want to certain I won't destroy it.

Hope that was clear, English is not my first language ;)

You have the slit / hole on the top of the plate. Just shake it out and you can replace the blue color paper with your own paper version.

Victor: I didn't know it was so simple to get it out, I've been afraid to even try to tamper with it!

Botond: That's great, I hope he has the colour I need :)

Thanks both of you!

Most welcome Fred, that`s why we are all here to help each other ;)
JohnM made a special add-on US flag background which fit perfectly to the liberty statue. You can find more detail information here : http://funstuffonly.com/tenyo/buysell/add-ons-for-sale/

Any suitable color paper which fit into your godzilla theme, will work I believe. Please consider the thickness of the paper,it could be a problem if it`s too thick. In worst case you can push the paper in but you are not be able to get it out. :o

Here's a video where the performer changes the color of the background:

Fred, great minds think alike. I want to use Godzilla too but have not found the right size. He has to be tiny.

I have tried other objects but they did not work as well as the Statue of Liberty. For sure the item should be one solid color. Multi colored items will not work or not work as well.

Good luck and give me a heads up on the tiny GODZILLA. If you can find one for us to use I will make a background that matches. I think I might be able to get a picture of Toyko to work. I think.

John, that sounds great - but the Godzilla I have in mind has oddly enough not the classic grey-ish color, but brown! Not sure that works against the city background...? This figure itself is perfect, it's in a similar material as the Statue of Liberty and fits perfectly to the props - maybe mount Fuji in the background instead, with soil and forests below and snow on top? I've attached a pic of my Godzilla for you to see.

I've been investigating a good way to paint it in a more proper way, but not even the Warhammer enthusiasts I know can come up with a good way to paint it so it will fit perfectly to what I want it to do. I've also been in a contact with a 3D printing company - I thought maybe they could scan it and print it in a different color, but no. The offered me to make a new Godzilla, but I felt the price tag to be a bit too much for my wallet :)

What's your suggestion?

indeed you may, weve just got it up and running after a whole year! Fred Weve also been toying with an Eye of the Idol Godzilla mod, where you have godzilla as the idol and tiny buildings instead of gems. and that reminds me about my performance plate I was going to make for it...

Well, every trick involving Godzilla is a great trick according to me - and there's none of them what I know :) I think you should do it!

Fred, what did you think of the new movie. I just watched it and hated it. It was so dark, I could not see much. The only cool parts were when Godzilla blew fire down the other monster's throat, but that was at the end of the movie. The movie really frustrated me.

Anyway, painting something like that is close to impossible. Whatever you use, it will probably peel off.

Try this and let me know if it works with your chocolate Godzilla.

First time I saw it I was disappointed, but now when I've watched it again the safety of my home I liked it a lot more. I had problems focusing on the action on the big screen, but on the TV it was - for me - much easier. The characters are quite flat and there's too little monster action - BUT it's still a lot better than the 1998 version, which I don't think should be called a Godzilla film!

But when everything comes around, I prefer the Toho films! Love seeing those miniatures getting destroyed! I had the pleasure of meeting Hauro Nakajima in Germany last years, which was powerful. I mean, he IS Godzilla! :D

I will check that background with my Godzilla when I get home from the office! I'll get back to you! Thanks!

Very cool!
I have a micro quadrotor, if you were really well practiced with it you could tie the cover (or military standard giant lizard catching net) to it and fly over Godzilla and drop it into place!

Pete you genius! The background could go from plain to green, or a picture of the lab with Bruce banner standing which changes to a smashed up lab. The cover is obviously the nuclear reactor thingy that goes haywire and then you have the hulk!
