Magical bolt penetration - my version of Magical door

Here you can discuss magic tricks that Tenyo enthusiast would enjoy but might not be aware of.

Magical bolt penetration - my version of Magical door

Postby ØyvindK » Fri Jan 12, 2018 5:40 am

When I saw the original Tenyo trick Magical door I was quite baffled (I blame my lack of experience and being completely new with Tenyo stuff), but after watching a few videos (I've only seen it on video) I suddenly understood how it worked, and I wanted to create my own version. I didn't want to create an exact copy, so I chose to use a bolt instead of a key. The whole thing is themed to resemble a hex bolt head.

I'm into 3D design and 3D printing, and after some prototyping I arrived at this:

overview_parts.jpg

Here's how it looks when assembled:

assembled1.jpg

assembled2.jpg

As you can see, the chain is a lot larger (links are 6 mm wide) than in the original (and the Elite version), and the only other item that is not 3D-printed is the cylindrical part of the bolt (which is a piece of aluminium tubing). The plastic parts has some glimmer/shine, and looks quite nice (the filament used has these particles in it, creating the effect).

It is also possible to use a real M8 steel bolt and nut (wing nut preferred), but that makes handling (and examination) slightly more difficult. I am considering embarrassing myself and show a short video of me performing the trick, just trying to find the courage...

Feedback is of course welcome, perhaps especially if you think the effect would look better with a real bolt and (wing)nut.

Thanks! It isn't perfect, though. It is rather easy to have it topple over when the chain is pulled taut.

I've also created a video where I (try to) perform it, but I'm keeping it unlisted, so people at least have to find this thread to see it. Here it is:

I didn't dare making an even bigger fool of myself by adding patter, so there's just some background music.

Nice looking props and I like the bolt idea. Your demo was convincing!

Really col looking design!

Just out of curiosity, what software do you use to create your designs?

Wow, I love it.

And a great video too.

This is what Tenyo Elite should have done. There version is boring.

Thanks all! Really happy you like it! I will most likely try to recreate a few more Tenyo tricks for myself (I think the Ultra tube is highest on my list), and I will of course post the results here! :-)

@Kirk: I do all my design work in Fusion 360. I started out using Onshape, but they changed their licensing to become useless for me, so I went all in with Fusion 360.

Well done looks great the video was also very well done. Could have added a little spin of the prop after the chain escapes to show both sides that the bolt is really still through the plates. ;)

Magical door is probably my favorite Tenyo for obvious reasons that know me. ;)

This may have been mentioned somewhere before but, for the standard Tenyo version, I like the idea of having one of your spectators (if performing for a group) wear the chain with key and request that they remove it and hand it to you to use in your performance. Perhaps you could have your wife or girlfriend sit in the audience wearing the necklace.

By borrowing the chain and key, it eliminates the idea of them being a prop.

Obviously, the bolt version seen here is another story. The option is eliminated but I really like this variation very much.

I seen that mentioned someplace before might have been on TMC. Only problem I see with that premise is the prop has a keyhole that the key fits right in and a place to put the chain so coincidence.... I don't think so.

Then maybe someone in the audience could wear the two plates as earrings.

Here’s an idea: what if you had Frankenstein assist you and he hands you one of his bolts? :)

It's the keyhole in the plates you can't explain away. If it was a round hole no problem. Still it is a good idea to have the chain and key on your neck or someone else to give the assurance the chain is real with no openings. Many might not even think about the key hole and the place to put the chain. From a distance, in a dark room, and they left their glasses at home they might not see it is a keyhole shape.

I like it the best of all my Tenyo it is what got me started even looking at Tenyo in the first place. There was no Tenyo here in Phoenix Ariz when I was a kid in the 60's never heard if it.

How long did it take to 3D print this after you have it all set up ready to print. Makes me want to get a 3D printer. Learning the software and getting things to proper scale can't be easy. :?

You have no idea how happy I am to have found this place! Lots of comments and even suggestions for improvements!

The Frankenstein idea was exceptional, and to simplify it I could possibly just create a Frankenstein model head where one (or more) bolt was detachable. That way no assistant is required. What a fabulous idea!

Spinning the prop after the release is also something I should have done in my video, agreed!

The printing time for this is not very long, the final version took maybe around 3 hours in total. Some prototype prints was also necessary, but I often print just parts of a part (to check fit and tolerances), not the whole part. That saves on time and plastic. I'm very experienced in this process, so I have a good idea beforehand how it will work out, and I know my printers well.

One more thing: I just created a heavier base (in the same plastic as the bolt head) for this, and that fixed the problem with it toppling over, so now it is easier to perform it well! I also think it looks even better with the added contrast between the base and the plates:

I also like the color contrast big improvement. The darker color gives it a thicker more heavy look. Very nice job.

Thanks! I've now started working on my version of the Ultra tube, but I am not trying to make it a copy of the original (visually, that is). Should I post about it on the open forum, or should I do that in the members only section?
