Easy 10 for me- one of, if not my all time favorite, Tenyo. Done properly this is unbelievable.

agreed, I've had some amazing reactions from this one. it was your good self john who gave me this one too :)
on our recent trip mazza and I bothered the magic demonstrators in hamleys. I performed an impromptu illusion scale on their mat and it was met with complete indifference (same as our d-lite routine) still, we had fun. experience tells me if you want a job at hamleys it's a prerequisite that you have a string dislike of the public.
back to the trick, it's effective, easy and super portable (I keep mine in my wallet).
there's a very nice wooden version of it out there too ;)
Now you see me...

The demonstrators at Hamley's are employed by Marvin's Magic. Most of these type of guys are not real magicians. They are hired, taught some tricks, and sent to the store to sell.

I have always found this to be a fantastic illusion. The little ruler really adds to the whole illusion and provides for a great routine.

Here's a performance which is actually, at least imho, mediocre because the performer actually tells you it's an illusion ... :

And here's a video which makes it look like it is supposed to, a magic trick with a good story/routine. And he also tells you it's an optical illusion but, ah well, just watch it and you'll hopefully know what I mean and see the difference in both performances ;) :

I think this is a great example of how performance and routine influence a, let's face it, simple trick.

From my experience this trick often goes well, however I have had a few people who unfortunately knew the optical illusion from books or even childrens magic sets. Even with the ruler they, more or less, knew what was happening.

Btw thanks Jimmy for the info about Marvin's Magic and Hamleys. I had a conversation with one of the performers at Hamleys last year and he told me only skilled magicians were hired to perform. This was clearly not the truth.

I always gave this a 9/10, but since I found out some people know what is happening (the optical illusion) this becomes an 8/10. Still a GREAT Tenyo to have and a definate must buy.

The demonstrator in the lower video is Andy Greget, who sells used magic books at conventions. He sells a lot of these when he demonstrates them.

The Anys kitties routine is the one I use, it covers the discrepancy in measuring the two cats very smoothly.
My set lives in my wallet, it's a good one for the times when someone demands to see a trick and you're not fully prepared

I also love fooling people with this trick. I find even people that know the standard boomerang illusion are confused by this trick. They at first assume they know what is going on but by the end are not quite sure...
This is still my favorite video of it:

For me this is the best optical illusion magic ever created. I was fooled by the simple boomerang trick when I was a kid and was re-fooled with this one. So it was twice. :)

Those smiles, and sense of wonder, is what Magic is all about. I bet if it had been the Fun-Stuff-Only crowd in that room, we would all given a quick "wink" to each other.
and now, on with the show ...

The reason everyone thinks the regular boomerang illusion sucks is because the boomerangs that were sold were the incorrect size and shape.

Background here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jastrow_illusion

When the boomerangs are the proper size, with the correct type of image on them, the original illusion is startling:

But short stubby boomerangs often produce the best illusion:

From what it sounds like. I need to get this one. Sounds like it would be great for restaurant strolling magic

It's good for strolling if you have a place to put it down on the table and have the spectators watching from the proper angle.

Love this trick... Simple yet dazzling!
I always have it lying around so whenever someone comes over I can show them
This..
And I love how the magician in the video rub the scale to stretch it out;)

great links Jimmy thanks :)
when I perform this I sometimes talk about how cats like to be stroked, if you stroke it the wrong way they cringe and curl up and if you stroke them the right way they smile and stretch out. you can mine the stroking on the cat cards

Yesterday I visit a my friend`s magic shop and have along with me a trick... an Illusion Scale in my pocket. I performed it in front of professional and amateur magicians in the shop. I didn`t expect that moment but the result was SHOCKING. My friend, the professional magician who owns also the shop almost dropped on the floor. I thought I will never fool him. Even though I have explained on how it`s done, he was still fooled badly by the props and could not find the logical explanation. The best part was the climax, when I put the black red collar cat on the cat with the blue collar showing that the one has shrunken that lot. It was really funny moment.

From now on, this will be 1 of the prop that I will collect, carry everywhere and perform it regularly. It`s one of the best Tenyo with excellent improvements.

It's really an incredible bit of genius by Suzuki. The moment when you move one bar over the other and it appears to visibly change size really makes the brain hurt, and that doesn't change even for you no matter how often you do it because the optical illusion is so strong.

This is my favorite Tenyo- it is beautiful and is so visual. I still remember the look on Simon's face when he saw it for the first time!

I think it was largely overlooked for a long time.

I recall having a disagreement with someone on the Cafe over this trick- that person thought the trick sucked.

I`m totally agree with the word GENIUS for Suzuki san Richard, even also for his other Tenyo creations :)

As a guy who is a math nerd and was a psych major in undergrad, I have a special spot in my heart for this effect. Andy Greget's presentation is especially good.

The best demo I have ever seen of this is the link below.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=M_wx3B1Bdjc

Straightforward, to the point, and convincing.

Talk about a pocket trick! This will fit just about anywhere. Packs tiny, impacts huge.
It's a Tenyo day in the neighborhood!
