This has always been one of my favourites. It's so clever ... and gets great reactions.

One of the improvements you can implement should you want to make your own version (the cups are the same as the ones used in other cups and balls effects by Tenyo) is making the tube examinable (as in show it empty) at the end of the routine. Perhaps a magnet in the gimmick and hiding one on/in the tube can hold the gimmick in place (it will 'fall down' when you thrown the coins in but it will stop in the top cup - not a big deal). At the end you are able to 'push' it on your lap which I consider to be a major improvement. A possible issue however is the sound it would make - a loud cough at the appropriate time could help  , but a better idea is perhaps drop the gimmick when you tilt the cups ;)

The cups can't be examined either, but there's no need for that - showing them empty at the start is enough as far as I'm concerned.

I don't really have a routine or story to accompany this wonderfull trick but I'm sure the clever minds on this forum can come up with one :)

This gets a big 8/10 from me.

That's interesting that it's possible to engineer one of your own.

As for a routine. Tetrophobia. The fear of fours.
Present the coins as Chinese businessmen in the US, and cups as an elevator/elevator floors.

In certain countries, some numbers are considered bad luck. In this case, the number 4. In China, elevators don't have a 4th floor. It goes from 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and so on.

So the coins are on a business trip and they all must take the elevator up or down to wherever they are traveling. But one of the patrons rooms is in the 4th floor.

Something, something, something. Have the routine end as normal, except have 2 coins on the 3rd cup and zero in the 4th.

I'm not sure if that is possible, as I'm unsure exactly what the gimmick is. But I'd definitely play to the elevator theme that the box suggests
Where's my colon?!

Hello David and everyone,

Honestly I don`t own this trick but I know how it works. I came up with alternative routine for the Tenyo Elevator Coins, hope it will work and you will love the idea. I call the routine “Money Rules” (I try to explain as short and as clear as possible)

Here is the idea.

What we need:
>6 quarters
>1 half dollar or other coin that has bigger value than a quarter and fits into the gimmick
>4 elevator cups with word written on the lip of each cup. We can use blank stickers if we don`t want to write it directly on the cups. (as shown in the pic.) The un-gimmick cup written with word “Business” and the other three written with “Lend”, “Work” and “Stolen” All cups are stacked (from bottom up) Business, Lend, Work, Stolen.
>A magic wand
>A coin clip or baby milk bottle nipple (long size) ( this gimmick is not really necessary if we want to perform it with sleight of hand later)
> The Elevator Coins tube is not required on this routine.

Setup:
1. Put the half dollar coin into the gimmick cup written with “Lend”
2. Put a quarter into the gimmick cup written with “Work”
3. Put a quarter into the gimmick cup written with “Stolen”
4. Ensure all gimmick cups at the same position / direction, if we want to write on the lip of the cups, ensure that the words facing the spec.
5. Put other 4 quarters and a magic wand on the table
6. The coin clip/nipple on your lap

Effect / routine:
The magician shows spec(s) 4 coins on the table and 4 cups (elevator coins cups) in the stacked position on the table and starting to explain a short story:

In this life, money is very important for us. We can lose money or we can make it. Let me demonstrate it to you. The magician takes the stacked cups and shows each cup empty. By doing this, the magician also explains, there are 4 ways in life (or probably more), that we can gain or lose money. First: business, second: we lend the money to someone, third: we work to make money and fourth: we can lose money if someone stole it from you. (All sequence on showing empty cups is the same as the demo video above) Next, we explain that all 4 quarters on the table represent all aspects / ways we can see from each cups.

Vanishing the coins:

1st alternative (with coin clip / nipple gimmick):
1. Steal the coin clip from the lap and take the first coin and say: we can lose our money if someone steal it. Take the quarter and put it into your palm (in actual slip it into the clip)
2. Take the 2nd quarter and say: we can spend our money and the money is gone.
3. Take the 3rd quarter and say: we can lend our money to friends or colleagues and therefore it`s gone.
4. Take the 4th quarter and say: ….or, we can use our money to make or invest into the business and therefore it`s gone too.
5. Take the magic wand to misdirect the spec and while taking the wand, drop the coin clip on your lap. Keep your fist close as if you still hold the quarters.
6. Wave the magic wand and make a move to throw all the coins into the cups and say….Yes…they are really gone!
(Note: I love to use bottle nipple to help me as coin clip. It`s easy to find and easy to make. It has several advantages: cheap, flexible, better grip and reduce the sound. Just put all quarters into the hole and do the same movement with the coin clip drop.)

2nd alternative (without coin clip gimmick):
1. Do step 1-4 above and false transfer all coins together at the end. The clink sound of the coins can give a good illusion while false transferring the coins.
2. Take the wand (with the coins already palmed )
3. Vanish all coin and do step 6 above.
4. Put the wand (+ coins) on your lap or behind your table. Be careful with the sound! (Therefore I prefer to use gimmick)

Closing the routine with climax:
The magician takes all stacked cups and do the secret move (to unload the coins) and say: well after all, we can lose our money but we gain.
1. Take the 1st cup written with “Stolen” and say : well…there is nothing we can do when the money was stolen, when it`s gone….unfortunately it will not come back (show the cup empty)
2. Take the 2nd cup written with “ Work” and say : Yes, we can lose our money because we spent it, but we can work for money (show a quarter appears in the cup and pour it on the table)
3. Take the 3rd cup written with “ Lend” and say : Yes, we can lose our money because we lent it to someone who need it, but later we can have our money back if they return it (show a quarter appears in the cup pour it on the table)
4. Take the 4th cup written with “Business” and say: I actually love this one and this is my favorite. Yes, we can lose our money because we invest it to do a business, and the good thing, if we can make a good business, we are not only get our money back, but we can double it (show the half dollar appears in the cup and pour it on the table)

Hope you can understand my alternative routine clearly but sure I`m open for any clarification.

Unfortunately I cannot try out with the actual prop because I don`t own it but I believe 90% of this routine will work. The other 10% that will not work is probably that the half dollar will be too big and will not fit into the gimmick and therefore we need other coin to replace the half dollar. Probably a coin with similar size to a quarter but maybe in gold color.

Credits:
Slydini : for the coin clip gimmick, lapping & misdirection techniques.
John Cornelius : for the nipple bottle coin clip gimmick.

Thanks and cheers,
Victor

Wow Victor, that is a very good routine! It can even be used by a business coach :)

It is not that easy to perform, without the tube. You must pretend to drop the 4 coins in the top cup, but you don't throw any coin actually!

Of course, other story lines are possible. Telling a story about going to the casino and don't make much profit, starting a business and voila, there is the bonus! A but moralistic though ...

I think however this routine will scare David off ... palming coins with a coin clip or bottle nipple (never heard of this latter idea!). Anyway, with a baby he will have a baby bottle at hand :). And then pretending to drop the coins ...

But the storyline is great! Thanks for inspiring us with your routine!

Thanks Rob, glad you like it. You were right, the tube can support to vanish the coins but unfortunately I think it will not fit into my routine.

Actually the sleight of hand or moves are the basic one and quite simple. But of course, practice is required for every sleight of hand moves in order to perform it smooth and natural.

In addition to clarify the moves to vanish the coins, I made some pictures and hopefully can give us better overview about the gimmick, moves and the handling.

The first picture described the 1st vanishing alternative with nipple gimmick created by John Cornelius (at the original version if I can remember, John added a small thimble at the end of the nipple tip for better grip and cut the edge all around but I think it is not really necessary) The misdirection for the lap is done while we take the magic wand (the right hand covers the audience sight while dropping the gimmick to the lap) The last picture (fig.4) is only to show that the nipple can hold the coins.

The second picture described the 2nd alternative (without gimmick) and pure sleight of hand by doing false transfer.

Hope this give us better overview. Thanks everyone !

Vic

Thanks Brett, the idea just pop up, so I decided to write it down before I forget :) The Tetrophobia concept is nice...most of Chinese don`t like the number 4 because when the pronounce it, it sounds like word "death"
Wish us a very good luck ;)

Victor ... this is an incredible, very clever and wonderfull idea! And you clearly put a lot of effort in this with such a detailed description, pictures, ... wow! Thanks a lot :)

I have to read it in detail and try it out with the props standing before me to have a better understanding because the script is very extensive!

Yes, as Rob sais, sleight of hand (especially with coins, I can do some card stuff pretty well) isn't something I really like because I never practiced it, but that's not a problem. As magic collectors we just need to know at least some sleight of hand and perhaps this routine of yours is a good starting point to learn some coin basics!

Not really a huge effort actually David but thanks for the compliments :) That tons of letters seems like lot of effort but I only tried to make a good description of the effect and method in order to get better understanding and overview. It`s like reading a good magic books or Tenyo instructions (for example) If I have this prop, maybe the best way is to make the video out of it ;) As you are the judge, please feel free to analyze the routine and give feedback. I`m not 100% sure will work, but I am confident at 90 %.

Sleight of hand really help us to support a routine and it`s impromptu. So wherever we go, we have the magic in us. I`m not also the expert David, but hope all illustrations will help.

My only objective is actually to share idea to this great community, spreading a good karma as John said.

Thank you.

I just thoroughly read your routine Victor. I am trying to find a way to use the original 'tube-with-gimmick' of the Elevator Coins props in stead of the sleight of hand ... .

Brilliant Victor!

Thank you for your generosity in sharing your ideas/routine!

David,
The best coin vanish (my opinion) is the one preformed in the "Cylinder and Coins" routine by John Ramsay. This routine, vanish, and misdirection has been expertly described by John Carney, and Victor Farelli.

Here is a link to to a video to see what the vanish (and routine) looks like.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0BNO_2xjGs
and now, on with the show ...

Thanks Bob. Of course Ramsay's coin and cylinder is one of the most beautiful coin routine ever invented. But really takes time to master it. It's also still on my wishlist. It's quite expensive to buy a good one.

Hi everyone,

I made another alternative routine beside my other idea described above.

PLEASE WATCH THIS VIDEO ONLY ONCE FOR MAXIMUM MAGICAL EXPERIENCE, unless you want to spoil it ! ;)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTdNfDH42GE

Today I would like to share with you one of a clever Tenyo created by a great mind Hideo Kato from Japan in 1978, The Elevator Coins.

The standard routine is available and demonstrated by other magicians as you can find the links in the tube. I also think the prop itself is very beautiful and the routine can be extended to another level, to make it more interesting. My routine here is not suitable for close up near the spec. but more suitable for stage with camera shoot due to some considerations. This routine was also inspired by Ramsay's Coins and Cylinder (with more simple handling of course) and also the great Syldini.

I hope you enjoy my routine : Cups and Coins which also remind us to the classic Cups and Balls. Thanks so much for watching. Please feel free to like, comment and subscribe :)

Thank you and have a great day !
