Tenyo Smoking Gnomes

Post by JohnM » Fri May 16, 2014 5:28 am

These little fellows are so cute. I never knew there was more than one design. I bid on the Tenyo Smoking Gnome before but have lost. They usually go for at least $50 each. They come in a small Tenyo box with the smoking rabbit logo. You put a little cigarette in the gnome's pipe and light it and then he puffs away in delight.

There is another set of three on auction now on ebay.

This is an interesting bank I picked up. There are four plastic plates with slots in them. To get a coin in the bank the slots must line up. Your spectators will try to line up the plates by tilting the bank but will end up just like the fella on the bottom of the package. :)
There is a logical way to get the coins in the bank but you'll have to figure it out yourself. ;)
This bank does not appear to be that old but for some reason I don't see it around too much.
(Sorry the pictures aren't that great)

Tenyo still sells the Micro Bank, Spin Bank, and Art Banks. They are pretty easy to find.

By the way my favorite Art Bank is the one with Mickey Mouse flying on a bird. The bird flaps its wing(s) when you put a coin in

This is a novelty paperweight by Tenyo.

I think the joke about the washer is very clever.

The main Tenyo website could be a good source for Tenyo Non Magic Items. Unfortunately the website is in japan language only.

http://www.tenyo.co.jp/

it lead us also to some unique toys, puzzles, etc

Here is a link to a French Tenyo Tribute Site (not Stereo's) that shows a nice assortment of the banks.

Here is the French Translation of the text next to the bank where Mickey is flying on a bird.
ART BANK (large)
Creator: Shigeru Sugawara

Two animated versions (a satellite that rotates and Mickey on the back of a goose which flaps its wings).
Just like Elliot said.

These smoking dolls remind me of Paulus de Boskabouter. Probably only my Belgian fellow members will know him.

Status Update:

I've got 3 of these little ZZ Top looking Gnomes on their way here now.
Had to have them they are smoking hot.

Wonder how much Tenyo had to pay them to use their likeness. 8-)

these things were used as an anti-masturbatory aid in the late 19th century, kind of like a hand-held chastity belt

I would love to have one of the three dolls in this new lot. Anyone else interested? Perhaps someone can buy all three, and distribute them afterwards :)
