The identical twin boxes illusion (3D printed)

Postby ØyvindK » Thu Apr 05, 2018 8:38 pm

I really needed a ribbon trick, and I liked the Unity Illusion by Tony Davies. However, since I am for the most part creating my own tricks, I had to give this one a try. My version is somewhat similar to the Unity Illusion, but I made mine a lot smaller, and came up with a different patter.

Here's some images:

The last image is obviously the state of affairs after the trick has been done.

And since I know people will want to see it in action, I've yet again made a fool of myself and made a video:

As you can see, my version has both weaknesses and strengths compared to the original. Overall, I think my version might be a tad better overall. But I will admit that it takes a few minutes to prepare it before performing.

Øyvind, you are a genius! The boxes look fantastic, as well as the stand!

And I am very impressed by the very smooth working!

I must admit that my attempt to make a version from Lego ended in a very poor result... :(

You're a real master!

Are you planning to make more copies? If yes, count me in! :D

Wow...it`s beautiful. I love the size actually, not too big and fits to the ribbon.

Øyvind Beautiful work. I see what you did there with the tray and that's brilliant thinking! Great job!

Thanks for all the kind words, guys! I appreciate that, but feel free to also criticize and suggest improvements.

I'm not planning on making this for sale, for several reasons. One is that it might be seen as immoral, as it is very heavily inspired by the Unity Illusion, another is that it is essentially still a prototype. It would need a bit more work to be salesworthy. And due to the size and mechanism inside, it is a bit finicky to prepare for performance. I need to use tweezers to do it. :-)

In other words, there is only a very slim chance I'll be making more of these, but nothing is ever set in stone.

@PeterW: Yes, I have no doubt you saw what I did, but the mechanism inside the boxes is most likely not exactly what you think. :-)

Its a shame if you don't make them to sell because I would only be interested in this size, its a fantastic version.

Looks awesome! I like the smaller size as well.
You have a real talent for engineering these 3D magical marvels. :D

OK, Øyvinds video made me think ... and inspired me to develop a better idea for a Lego version of this effect.

I was busy with a way too complicated mechanism that didn't work.
Today I got a new idea, and here's a demo video:

Now I must think of a nice design :) This is, as is Øyvinds creation, a prototype.

Very nice, Rob!
Am I correct in guessing that you can't lift the boxes off of the tray and show both the boxes and the tray from all sides, like I did in my version?

I love this, and the smaller size is perfect. Please add me to the queue should you decide to make more beyond the prototype.

No, I made a sliding construction to make it more... Legolike :)

But I must say, that I like your version more :) With a 3D printer you can make not only an exact copy of the mechanism, but also a beautiful design.

Your version is the best, the design is fantastic, and the working is very smooth, and it is examinable at the end!

And I don't consider it as unethical if you make some copies because your version looks totally different and is actually an improved version of the original Unity Illusion.

And I still would love to buy a copy from you! :)
