REQUEST FOR MEMBERSHIP by EMAIL ONLY

Post by JohnM » Tue Nov 22, 2016 10:51 pm

Guys,

We have been inundated for a while now by spammers from Eastern Europe trying to join the forum. They seem to be able to quickly get around the Spam Counter Measures. I get about 25 new user requests a day. Since I only coming here about once a week, I wind up with over 100 to vett.

In the past I did look at each one and was able to pull a couple of real requests out of the mess. But for now, I have turned off new registrations.

If you want to join this forum or know someone who wants to join just drop me an email at johnmazza1@gmail.com and tell me who you are, or who you know, or what other magic affiliations you have and I will get you right in.

John

This problem is still very prevalent.

I tired all kinds of counter measures but nothing has worked.

I want everyone who wants to join the forum to be able to. Everyone is invited to join.

I have the registration opened now and will open it anytime I get a request either from one of you guys or from someone via email to join.

Spread the word that we are open to new members.

Thanks for the feedback Richard. I was going to ask you if you have the same problem and if so how to stop or slow it.

We are still having problems receiving new registrations for the forum.

I tried using Google's recaptcha for Spambot Counter Measure but I must not have configured it correctly because legit people could not get past it.

When I try the other counter measures the Spammers get right through and we rack up at least 25 fake application a day.

If you know someone who wants to join the forum then please tell them to email me at jmazza1@comcast.net.

Once I get their email I simplify the counter measure and they get right in. I then have them email me their user name (the email notification for new registered does not work either), I approve them and set the countermeasure back to recaptcha.

Luckily our new members were persistent and emailed me to get in.

Is there any way you can incorporate some type of 'I am not a robot' checkbox on the registration page, or is the problem more complicated than this?

I am looking into that. I think Google's Recaptcha 2.0 has that check box.

The guy who oversees my web stuff found a plug in that eliminated the problem. But I don't know anything about the guts of these things.
I would suggest Googling plug-ins for whatever type of forum software you're using. This is a large problem that is well known, and chances are that someone will have written a plug in to fix it.

So it seems that we finally have a Spam Countermeasure that is working better than the others.

We still get spam registrations but maybe 5 a day vs 100.

If you or anyone you know registers for this forum, please email me with your user name so I can find your account amongst the spammers and approve you.
